Among the high-achieving communes of Bordeaux, Pomerol is surely the most anarchistic. No classification system save reputation alone serves to differentiate one winery from another and as one grape variety - Merlot - constitutes about 90% of the wine made, there is precious little to establish a quantifiable difference. That said there is no shortage of spectacular wine in this small region Pomerol is a tiny village on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, with less than three square miles of area, and a population of less than 1,000. This miniscule area's wines define the Merlot grape at its very best.
