Pomerol is a much-respected red wine appellation in the Bordeaux region of southwestern France. Both historically and physically, it stands apart from other Bordeaux appellations. It is roughly one-seventh of the size of its much larger Right Bank neighbor Saint-Émilion AOC and is on par with the smallest Left Bank commune of Saint-Julien AOC in the Médoc. The Libournais includes the sub-regions of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol (among others). Among the high-achieving communes of Bordeaux, Pomerol is surely the most anarchistic. No classification system save reputation alone serves to differentiate one winery from another and as one grape variety - Merlot - constitutes about 90% of the wine made, there is precious little to establish a quantifiable difference.
